Hi, I'm Michelle... Print

Michelle

"I moved home with my parents after living in a rehabilitation nursing home for 2 years..."

My aim is to go back to Uni and finish my teaching degree with my friends. But my rehab funding has been cut.

Recovering from a brain injury is possible if you have the rehabilitation and support resources you need, when you need them.  Sometimes this can take several years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears by everyone involved. But it's worth it...every bit!

If I can't get the rehab I need, I'll end up in an aged care nursing home and it will all have been for nothing.  What a waste!

At 19, Michelle had the world at her feet. She had just completed the first year of a University teaching degree and had come top of her year. Someone who loved going out with her friends, she had plans to travel, get married and have a family one day.

But not long after her nineteenth birthday, Michelle suffered an acute asthma attack and her life changed forever.

In the few minutes she lay unconscious and unable to breathe, she suffered an hypoxic brain injury.

Without knowing if she would survive, her parents were advised to investigate nursing home placements for their daughter.

They fought to get the rehabilitation Michelle needed and she subsequently entered Victoria’s Slow to Recover Program.

After 2 years on this slow stream rehabilitation program, Michelle was able to go home to her family, just before her 21st birthday.

Despite some assistance, Michelle's family are responsible for most of her support. But they cannot do this forever.

Michelle also needs ongoing rehabilitation to continue her recovery.

But if her family support fails, she may face the future in an aged care facility that she – her parents – have fought so hard to avoid.
