"My name is Kreesan and I'm currently living in a hospital ward because there's nowhere else for me to go..."
I am half way though my Law Degree and I want to return to the ANU and finish.
I also want to get back to my teaching duties and get my life back on track.
But because I've had to remain in hospital without the rehab I need, I now need a lot more assistance to regain my independence.
All I want is to live in the community and get on with my life!
A skilled teacher and traveller, Kreesan suffered an aneurysm on his brain stem. This has left him with limited movement and unable to speak. Kreesan communicates by writing in longhand.
Kreesan says:
"I have an Acquired Brain Injury that has left me with quadriplegia . I've been living in the Canberra Hospital as an inpatient ever since my injury happened.
I would like the politicians to immediately fund accommodation for young people to assist them to get out of hospitals and homes for the aged and back into the community.
I want to live like a regular person in my own home. This would give me privacy and some quality of life to pursue my own interests like music, art, computers and to further my studies.
I have two years of my Law Degree at the Australian National University (ANU) to complete and would like to resume my studies as soon as possible. This is in addition to other higher education qualifications I currently hold eg Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Dip Ed.
I have been in hospital for over a year and apart from family visits and occasional visits from a few friends, I am totally isolated and dependent on staff to assist me.
I do not go beyond my Ward floor at the Hospital and miss all the day to day experiences like fresh air, sunshine etc and would love to escape back into the real world.
I understand that the Government is considering only supporting the under fifty year olds to live in the community.
I am 50 years of age with young interests and if I am disqualified on the basis of age, than I’m screwed."
