Support for Disability Report

The Minister for Human Services, Cassy O’Connor has supported the findings of the Productivity Commissions report into Disability Long Term Care and Support released today.

Ms O’Connor said the report recognised the need for a National Disability Insurance Scheme to deal with a growing demand for disability services.

“Around Australia we are aware that the disability support system is not financially viable, not meeting current need and often operates in a crisis mode,” Ms O’Connor said.

“The current social security system in Australia entitles all citizens to some level of health services and income support; however there is no equivalent entitlement to disability care and support services.

“There is a real issue of sustainability in the system and demand for services continues to grow as our population ages.

“The method of financing a new care and support scheme must take account of future liabilities.

“The recommendations from the productivity commission recognise this urgent need.

“I will continue to work with stakeholders, state and federal colleagues to ensure that this scheme becomes a reality so all Australians living with disability can access the support and services they need, when they need them."
