Pension increase welcomed
The Young People In Nursing Homes Alliance today welcomed the Rudd Government’s budget focus on Australians with disability and its increase in the disability pension.
YPINH national director Bronwyn Morkham said young Australians living in nursing homes struggle to afford even the most basic things.
“Disability is an expensive occupation,” she said, “and most of the disability pension these young people receive goes to the nursing homes’ care costs.
“There’s little left to buy the everyday items the rest of us take for granted. Things like a new pair of socks for winter or even a haircut.
“Tonight’s announcement is long overdue recognition that these individuals are some of the most vulnerable in our society and they have been doing it hard.
6,700 young Australians currently live in nursing homes. Many more are at risk of placement because the supports and services they need to remain in the community aren’t available.
“Keeping up with cost of living increases is never easy and we are especially pleased that in a time of economic uncertainty, Australians with disability have been acknowledged,” Dr Morkham said.
As well as welcoming the increase in the disability pension, Dr Morkham said the increase in carer payments will also assist family members supporting their loved ones in the community.
“The increases announced tonight will ease the financial burden families and carers carry in caring for their loved ones.
