Clear mandate for more disability funding [8/2/2007] Print

Source: Senator Rachel Siewert, Greens Senator for Western Australia

Senator Rachel Siewert has called on the Commonwealth and State Governments to increase funding for disability services, in particular for accommodation.

"I welcome the report from the Senate Community Affairs Committee today into the funding and operation of the Commonwealth State/Territory Disability Agreement (CSTDA)," said Senator Siewert.

"This report makes clear that significant changes are needed to the Agreement. The Committee identifies whole of life planning, specialised assessment teams, indexation, portability and advocacy as key areas.

"Most importantly, the committee identifies that more money is needed."

"I urge new Community Services Minister Nigel Scullion to adopt the committee recommendations and ensure that the next CSTDA delivers real changes for people living with disabilities."
