The Bligh Government today announced the purchase of almost a $1 million Toowoomba property which is set to provide greater supported accommodation options for ageing carers of people with a disability in Toowoomba.
Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today said while visiting the Toowoomba former bed and breakfast Anden that the purchase of the former bed and breakfast and the lease of another property was part of the Federal Government’s Disability Assistance Package.
“One of my key priorities is providing greater accommodation options for ageing parents caring for a loved one with a disability,” Minister Palaszczuk said.
“The accommodation units will provide ageing parents caring for a loved one with a disability with greater peace of mind about the future.
“The purchase of Anden will provide six people with a disability with their own bedroom and ensuite, as well as generous outdoor living areas.
“It will provide a lifestyle that maximises their independence and at the same time provides them with a level of assistance they require,” she said.
Minister Palaszczuk said funding for the new accommodation in Toowoomba was a joint initiative between the Bligh and Rudd Governments, which was announced in 2008.
State Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine today joined with Minister Palaszczuk to inspect the Anden apartments and the property in North Street.
Mr Shine said he welcomed the purchase of the Anden and the lease of the North Street property because it was a clear indication to the Toowoomba community that the Bligh Government had responded to their local needs for supported accommodation options for people with a disability.
“The apartments will not only give people with a disability greater accommodation options, but also provide them with easy access to local services, hospital and transport options,” Mr Shine said.
“This clearly demonstrates the Bligh and Rudd Government’s commitment to providing infrastructure and services to Queenslanders who have a disability,” he said.
Minister Palaszczuk said the Bligh Government’s Toward Q2 strategy was delivering fairer and safer communities – particularly for ageing parents caring for a loved one with a disability.
