Hope is part of the cure
Wesley Mission Melbourne applauds The Sunday Age for putting the spotlight on the inadequacy of appropriate care for young people recovering from catastrophic injuries.
An environment that engenders hope, with the possibility of new life and eventual independence, is more likely to shape good recovery than an aged care facility, where the focus is on people at the end of their lives.
The other important factor is that the families of these young people need support, as they often bear much of the burden associated with catastrophic injury. It is hard enough to place an elderly family member into care, but it is another placing a young person into care, especially into an aged care facility.
